Traini Translation
Traini is a technology company leveraging empathetic large language models to analyze and interpret pet vocalizations and behaviors. Their app empowers pet owners to deepen their bond with their pets while fostering connections within a community of fellow pet lovers. I was tasked with designing the experience and interface for the translation feature while revamping key elements, including the user profile system, navigation bar, and chat function.

Background
The Traini app redesign project emerged from a need to increase user engagement and support a strategic product shift. After our technical team trained and developed an in-house model on behavioral and voice data, the goal for the design team was to deliver a seamless experience for new users, enabling them to easily interpret their pet's emotions and behaviors. This redesign focused on creating intuitive interfaces and ensuring the translation features were both accessible and impactful.

My Role
As part of the design team, I led the end-to-end design of the translation feature, encompassing product research, stakeholder communication, design, and prototyping. By conducting weekly meetings with developers, designers, and product managers, I iterated quickly while incorporating diverse perspectives from various areas of expertise.

Research Methods
Before diving into iterations, I took a step back to understand the challenges users might face. I mapped out the customer journey, focusing on key functions to identify potential friction points. I also reviewed current JIRA issues related to our iOS app, summarizing key takeaways and proposing potential solutions. This analysis provided a solid foundation for moving forward.
Finally, to design a competitive translation function, I researched leading apps in the language and voice translation space, documenting both successful features and areas for improvement. By the end of this process, I identified key opportunities to differentiate our function by focusing on user experience and aseamless integration with existing features.
Additionally, during this process, I collaborated with internal stakeholders, the marketing team, and product managers to gather client requirements that needed to be integrated into the new design.

Design Process
I started by crafting detailed tasks and user flows to uncover edge cases and ground the design in real user intent. With tight deadlines and an established design language, I opted to dive straight into high-fidelity screens. Regular feedback sessions with product and engineering teams were essential, allowing me to iterate quickly and ensure the solution was both practical and polished.

User Profile System
Designed to create a more intuitive profile system, color coding was utilized to indicate which profile is currently selected. Enabling users to easily distinguish between their own profiles and their dogs' profiles. Corresponding iconography was also implemented to provide the user with more affordances when navigating the profile tab.
Navigation Bar
Updated navigation bar, making it easier for users to access key features and navigate seamlessly across the app.

User Chat
Revamped user chat interface to streamline conversations, enhance readability, and improve the overall messaging experience.
Project Recap
Traini's translation feature launched in December 2024, and being part of the team that designed and delivered this product was an incredibly rewarding experience. Some of my favorite moments included daily design demos and weekly stakeholder meetings, where we gained invaluable insights into client needs and engineering challenges. In addition to the design critiques and in-office usability tests I conducted, I would have included alpha testing with more time to gather quantitative data and identify further areas for improvement.
